Wallbox in Switzerland: notification, permits and subsidies

In short

Does a wallbox have to be notified in Switzerland?

Yes.

Connecting a charging station for electric vehicles must be reported to the grid operator before work starts (NIV Art. 23, ESTI directive 221). The electrician handles this with the installation notice, usually together with a technical connection request. The safety certificate follows after installation.

Background

#

Yes, a wallbox must be notified in Switzerland: the electrician has to report the connection to the grid operator before work starts (NIV Art. 23); ESTI directive 221 names charging infrastructure for electric vehicles explicitly.

Laypeople may not connect it themselves. After the final inspection, the owner receives a safety certificate and submits it to the grid operator. A private wallbox on an existing parking space usually needs no building permit – but the municipality decides.

What decides on storage

#
  1. Licensed work only: anyone permanently connecting electrical products to electrical installations needs an installation licence from the Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations (NIV Art. 6). Without a licence, laypeople may only replace individual sockets, switches and lights on existing protected final circuits (Art. 16 para. 2) – a wallbox is not one of them.

  2. Notification before work starts: installation work must be reported to the grid operator before it is carried out (NIV Art. 23). ESTI directive 221 explicitly lists the "connection of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles" among these cases; in practice, the report is called an installation notice. The grid operator sets the form.

  3. Completion with a safety certificate: before handover, a final inspection must be carried out and recorded in a safety certificate, which the installer hands to the owner. The owner then reports completion to the grid operator and sends it the safety certificate (NIV Art. 24 paras. 2–6).

  4. What the grid operator may add: the VSE industry rules WV-CH 2025 provide for a technical connection request before the installation notice for charging infrastructure and require a control option for the grid operator on charging systems above 3.7 kVA. The WV-CH become binding when the grid operator incorporates them into its terms; power limits such as 11 kVA are set by the individual grid operator, not by federal law.

  5. Building law: according to the guidance of the cantonal building, planning and environment directors, a charging station on an existing parking space of a single- or multi-family house can in most cases be installed without a building permit; new parking spaces require one. In Canton Zurich, charging stations at existing spaces that are not publicly accessible need neither a permit nor a notification. In Aargau, a building permit may be needed outdoors; the municipality decides.

  6. Tenants and condominiums: tenants may only alter the rented property with the landlord’s written consent (OR Art. 260a). In condominiums, construction measures follow the rules of co-ownership (ZGB Art. 712g). The Federal Council sent a "right to charge" into consultation on 19 June 2026 – until parliament decides, it is not law.

The process in five steps

Tick off for your project

  1. Clarify the starting point

have the service connection and distribution board checked, agree the charging power with the installer, obtain the consent of the landlord or condominium association and clarify permits with the municipality for new parking spaces or outdoor locations.

  2. Connection request and installation notice

the electrician submits the technical connection request and the installation notice to the grid operator – before work starts. In Aargau, AEW Energie AG has handled notifications through a digital portal since 2025.

  3. Wait for approval and install

approving the installation notice releases the work. Above 3.7 kVA, the installer fits the wallbox with a control option for the grid operator.

  4. Final inspection and safety certificate

the installer tests the system, records the result in the safety certificate and hands it over. The owner reports completion to the grid operator and submits the certificate.

  5. Combine with the solar system

a wallbox that charges when solar power is available increases self-consumption. The industry rules treat bidirectional charging stations like generating systems running in parallel with the grid – additional connection conditions apply.

Checked for your roof, not just read up on

Once the framing is clear, a property-specific check with roof, grid and documentation is worthwhile.

The responsible authorities are decisive. Always verify binding details – amounts, deadlines and conditions – for your specific property against the current status of the respective authority.
