Municipal notification: allow at least 30 days
For permit-exempt solar installations, section 47 of Nidwalden’s building ordinance requires the official notification form at least 30 days before construction, including elevation and site plans. First establish whether your project qualifies. Protected buildings and townscape protection zones may require a building application. The cantonal guidance specifically mentions the village zone in Stans and the surrounding protection zone in Wolfenschiessen. Ask the municipality to check the protection status before detailed design.
Grid connection: start with the property address
Identify the grid operator from your connection, not just the canton’s name. EWN provides documents for PV installations and commissioning. In Beckenried, the Gemeindewerk is a separate contact for electricity supply and connection applications. The electrical specialist coordinates connection capacity, inverter, metering and any connection upgrade with the responsible utility. Municipal notification does not replace this technical coordination. Check the applicable feed-in tariff and payment for guarantees of origin separately with that utility.
Roof renovation and solar: check funding together
The 2026 programme lists CHF 60/m² for eligible insulation, or CHF 120/m² when combined with full-area PV. On roofs, this means at least 50% PV coverage. This funds insulation, not solar modules at a flat rate. Conditions include a building permit issued before 2000 and specified insulation values; the programme lists further minimum amounts and documentation. Submit the cantonal construction-funding application before work starts. Funding is limited and there is no legal entitlement.
Pronovo: handle federal funding separately
For a new PV installation below 100 kW with self-consumption, the small one-time payment (KLEIV) is the relevant federal funding route. Apply after commissioning. Prepare the documents in advance: Pronovo lists an acceptance report, land-register extract and payment details, with photographs additionally required for integrated systems. This timing differs from the cantonal insulation application. Eligibility and the amount depend on the actual installation; do not treat an assumed payment as an approved grant.
Costs: compare quotes with the same scope

Storage and taxes: avoid blanket savings assumptions
Storage can increase self-consumption, but its economics depend on the circumstances. We therefore compare PV with and without a battery using your consumption, investment cost and applicable electricity tariffs. Article 34 of Nidwalden’s tax law links deductions for energy-saving investments in private property to eligibility under direct federal tax rules. This does not guarantee a particular saving in francs. Clarify how your project is treated with the tax office or your tax adviser before calculating a net price.
