Background
#In the EWN supply area, the 2026 PV feed-in tariff in Nidwalden follows the reference market price published by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE); EWN additionally pays 2 Rp./kWh for the quality of solar electricity.
For PV systems below 150 kW, EWN also applies the statutory minimum remuneration under Art. 15 EnA from 1 January 2026. The reference market price under Art. 15 REO is published quarterly by 12 noon on the 10th working day after the end of each quarter, so it is not a fixed annual value. In the standard case, electricity is used on site first and only the surplus is exported; a battery, wallbox, ZEV or LEG changes the calculation.
EWN feed-in remuneration is separate from the Pronovo one-time payment, and tariffs and settlement must be checked with the responsible grid operator outside the EWN supply area.
What drives the economics
#The responsible grid operator is the first decision. The published 2026 remuneration comes from Elektrizitätswerk Nidwalden (EWN) and applies to its supply area. A property in the canton of Nidwalden is therefore not automatically an EWN tariff location; the grid area, metering point and billing partner must be confirmed before quoting.
The date 1 January 2026 changes the minimum protection. For PV systems below 150 kW, EWN states that the statutory minimum remuneration is included in addition to the market-based logic. Art. 15 para. 1 EnA provides the legal basis for the nationally harmonised price when grid operator and producer cannot agree on remuneration.
The reference market price is a quarterly value. Under Art. 15 REO, the SFOE publishes it by 12 noon on the 10th working day after the end of each quarter; a project calculation in August 2026 must therefore not use an arbitrary annual average. The calculation should state the publication date and tariff period used.
Self-consumption and feed-in are two different value streams. Every kilowatt-hour used in the building for household demand, a heat pump, wallbox or business load is not settled as EWN feed-in. Only the remaining surplus falls under the EWN mechanism with the reference market price and 2 Rp./kWh for solar quality; the consumption profile and metering concept determine the result.
The 2 Rp./kWh is an EWN statement for the quality of solar electricity, not a uniform Swiss tariff. EWN lists this supplement in its 2026 electricity-price information in addition to market-based remuneration. It must therefore not be transferred to other grid operators or assumed to be guaranteed for future tariff years.
Pronovo is a separate funding track. The one-time remuneration (RU) is a federal investment contribution administered through Pronovo; it neither replaces EWN feed-in settlement nor the self-consumption assessment. The quote, incentive application and grid settlement must therefore state the same system capacity and commissioning status.
The process in six steps
#Tick off for your project
Establish the grid area and billing partner
compare the electricity bill, property address and metering point with EWN. EWN’s 2026 feed-in information applies directly only where EWN supplies the property; otherwise, the local grid operator must provide its conditions.
Define system size and tariff model
document installed PV capacity, self-consumption, surplus export and any extension separately. If the system is below 150 kW, include the minimum remuneration under Art. 15 EnA in the calculation; EWN states this threshold explicitly.
Record the tariff period used
take the SFOE reference market price under Art. 15 REO for the relevant quarter from the current SFOE publication. According to the SFOE, publication is due by the 10th working day after the end of the quarter; outdated or estimated values must not appear unmarked in a quote.
Model the consumption pattern before selecting components
map daytime load, heat pump, wallbox, battery, ZEV or LEG as separate scenarios. Show EWN feed-in, avoided electricity purchases and any metering or billing costs separately instead of valuing all generation with one tariff.
Coordinate grid connection and commissioning with EWN
plan the connection request, metering concept, meter, commissioning and feed-in using EWN’s technical documents. The existing Nidwalden grid-connection guide covers this workflow; finalise the remuneration calculation only after the metering and settlement logic is confirmed.
Complete Pronovo and the economic assessment separately
submit RU documents with identical system data and document the revenue calculation using the specific quarterly value, EWN’s 2 Rp./kWh supplement and the self-consumption scenario. Reconcile any change in capacity or metering concept before commissioning.
Checked for your roof, not just read up on
Once the framing is clear, a property-specific check with roof, grid and documentation is worthwhile.
