#Thurgau's battery storage funding amounts to CHF 1,000 per stationary battery in 2026, capped at 25% of the total investment.
In the standard case, the battery complements an existing or planned grid-connected PV system, has at least 10 kWh of usable capacity and is installed by a recognised specialist. The application must be submitted through the energy funding portal before installation starts; for an extension, the programme additionally requires 10 kWh and that the initial installation was funded at least three years earlier.
One important exception has already occurred: the 700-application quota for 2026 is full under the funding programme, and new submissions go onto a waiting list. This guide explains the Energy Office conditions and the risk of installing before funding approval.

What decides on storage
#The grant is capped: the programme provides CHF 1,000 as a one-time investment contribution per system, but no more than 25% of the total investment in the supported measure. A more expensive battery therefore does not increase the cantonal contribution beyond these two limits.
Usable capacity determines basic eligibility: the stationary battery must provide at least 10 kWh of usable capacity and be linked to an existing or planned grid-connected solar-electric system. A standalone battery without this PV connection does not fit funding category 7.1.
An extension has an additional hurdle: the newly installed battery capacity must also be at least 10 kWh, and the initial installation must have been funded at least three years earlier. A small retrofit or a battery replaced too soon does not meet this condition.
The receipt date is practically decisive in 2026: the category is limited to 700 applications, and the date of submission determines consideration. The funding programme states that this quota has already been reached and that further applications are kept on a waiting list by receipt date.
Starting before the decision remains a separate risk: the application must be filed before installation begins. Anyone who installs before the funding approval does so at their own risk under the programme; the waiting list is not a commitment because 2027 support depends on the programme continuing.
The future operating model belongs in the quote: the canton expects the operator to make 10% of the storage capacity available to the electricity utility on request for compensation; neighbourhood storage is excluded from this expectation. Clarify this point with the specific utility and the battery control system before ordering.

Classify the funding category

Align the technical option and costs
the quote must show usable capacity, total investment, specialist installation and the planned battery control system. Calculate the CHF 1,000 amount and the 25% cap separately, and record the expected 10% availability for the utility.
Prepare the documents completely
align the PV system, battery, usable capacity, quote and installation start. The Energy Office directs funding applications and project completions to the energy funding portal; electronic submission has applied since 1 January 2021.
File before installation starts
submit the funding application before fitting the battery and retain the receipt date. For 2026, the 700-application quota is already full, so a new submission is placed on the waiting list by its receipt date.
Decide on the approval and installation risk
wait for the funding approval if eligibility is needed for the investment decision. If installation starts earlier, the programme places it at the owner's risk; a later award on the waiting list is possible only if the programme continues in 2027.
Document installation and align operation
have the battery installed by a recognised specialist, retain the application, quote and system data, and clarify the expected 10% availability with the utility. The technical installation must match the submitted storage capacity.
