Solar Installation Zürich – Planning to Commissioning

In Canton Zürich, owners usually want a clear project flow from first assessment to handover rather than a loose mix of subcontractors. That is exactly how we run solar projects – from the pre-check to documented commissioning.

Local system fit

Zurich fully implemented MuKEn 2014 by 2022 and leads Switzerland in ZEV projects for multi-family buildings. From 2026, Local Electricity Communities (LEG) enable cross-property electricity sharing with up to 60% network fee reduction. This changes project planning: installation, metering and grid-operator coordination must be designed for LEG readiness from the start.

For a solar installation in Zürich, success depends not only on module area but on the process: 3D survey, transparent quote, grid-operator coordination and commissioning with full documentation. Vigorek handles the full coordination — from the initial estimate to handover.

Context

How this service works in Zürich in practice.

Zürich comes with its own framework conditions – from incentives and tax treatment to technical requirements. From those, a cleanly managed project flow for your property takes shape.

01Service focus

What the full installation secures on site

In Canton Zürich, owners usually want a clear project flow from first assessment to handover rather than a loose mix of subcontractors. That is exactly how we run solar projects – from the pre-check to documented commissioning. From the initial estimate and 3D survey through a transparent quote to full commissioning — one project, one process, one contact.

  • Initial estimate and 3D survey (drone): roof, orientation, shading, electrical setup and possible constraints — before any quote is prepared.
  • Transparent quote with clearly separated line items: material, installation, scaffolding, electrical, registration, commissioning — each one individually listed.
  • Coordination of Pronovo registration, metering concept, grid-operator queries and meter replacement through to full commissioning.
  • Optional integration of battery storage, wallbox and energy management — only where the usage profile and expansion goals support it.
02Regional framework

Why this canton shifts the priorities

Zurich fully implemented MuKEn 2014 by 2022 and leads Switzerland in ZEV projects for multi-family buildings. From 2026, Local Electricity Communities (LEG) enable cross-property electricity sharing with up to 60% network fee reduction. This changes project planning: installation, metering and grid-operator coordination must be designed for LEG readiness from the start. Zurich is Switzerland's largest cantonal market. With over 12,600 existing installations and only 4% of potential used, this represents the greatest growth potential. The combination of high incomes (maximum tax deduction) and high roof availability (70%+ suitable) makes Zurich the most attractive PV market in Switzerland.

  • In Canton Zürich, a pre-check saves time when permits, metering or electrical setup are not standard.
  • Owners want traceable quotes instead of aggressive package promises.
  • A documented commissioning reduces later questions and service overhead.
03Project logic

How coordination makes the difference

In the Canton of Zurich, investments in PV systems are 100% deductible as property maintenance – for both new installations and replacements. Costs can be spread over up to three tax periods. Pre-check for roof, shading, electrical setup and potential constraints.

  • Pre-check for roof, shading, electrical setup and potential constraints.
  • Coordination of registration, metering concept and commissioning.
  • Clean handover with traceable documentation for operations and service.

Regional context

Solar system installation in Zürich: what matters here

In Canton Zürich, cantonal rules, the responsible grid operator and local permit procedures shape how a project is planned and delivered. The points below show what really matters before quoting, installation and handover.

Regional starting point

In Canton Zürich, incentives, grid operators and permit procedures change the priorities for this service.

Service core

A complete solar installation depends on sequencing, grid-operator coordination, electrical planning and clean commissioning.

Grid & registration

For Canton Zürich, grid operators such as EWZ, EKZ, metering concept and commissioning are aligned early.

Decision reason

In Canton Zürich, a pre-check saves time when permits, metering or electrical setup are not standard.

Execution

Pre-check for roof, shading, electrical setup and potential constraints.

Economic frame

Feed-in tariff and self-consumption are matched to the property; in the canton, 9.0 Rp./kWh Minimum (EKZ) / 12.91 Rp./kWh (EWZ) / 14 Rp./kWh LEG is one relevant reference point.

Cantonal framework

Which cantonal framework shapes the project in Zürich.

The technical service stays the same, but the project frame changes with the canton. That is exactly where incentives, tax treatment and MuKEn requirements become strategically relevant.

Local context

Zürich sets the economic pace for this service.

Zurich is a pioneer in ZEV projects (self-consumption associations) in multi-family houses and has the most registered ZEV communities nationwide. ETH Zurich actively researches building-integrated solar technology.

Tax and subsidy logic

In the Canton of Zurich, investments in PV systems are 100% deductible as property maintenance – for both new installations and replacements. Costs can be spread over up to three tax periods. Zurich has no general cantonal PV top-up. The relevant elements are the Pronovo one-time payment, the cantonal battery storage subsidy of CHF 500/kWh (max. CHF 15,000, limited until the end of 2026), and municipal programs depending on the municipality. In the City of Zurich, EWZ is relevant with an average standard tariff of 12.91 Rp./kWh and 14 Rp./kWh in the LEG model.

Permits and energy law

Since January 1, 2023, most solar systems in Canton Zurich only require notification (30 days before construction) — no building permit. Exceptions: listed buildings, protected zones, facade systems on protected objects. Zurich implemented MuKEn 2014 as of 2022. New buildings must install at least 10 watts of solar capacity per square meter of energy reference area. The revised Energy Act (EnG ZH) also requires switching to renewable systems when replacing heating.

Market signal and location

Zurich is Switzerland's largest cantonal market. With over 12,600 existing installations and only 4% of potential used, this represents the greatest growth potential. The combination of high incomes (maximum tax deduction) and high roof availability (70%+ suitable) makes Zurich the most attractive PV market in Switzerland. There is no general cantonal PV bonus in Zurich. The standard element is the Pronovo one-time payment (modelled in the calculator as CHF 360/kWp). In addition, there is a cantonal battery storage subsidy of CHF 500/kWh (max. CHF 15,000, limited until the end of 2026) and selected municipal add-on programs depending on the municipality.
