Photovoltaic incentives in Nidwalden: 2026 rules

The Nidwalden Energy Office refers to a cantonal incentive programme for building-envelope measures and heating replacement. The reachable cantonal overview does not state a blanket PV amount. Official solar consultation is also available, while the national one-time remuneration through Pronovo must be checked separately. The first task is therefore to classify the project: cantonal building programme, solar consultation or national PV support. This page summarises the reachable official information and does not replace a binding review of your specific application.

What you need to know first.

In Nidwalden, three support paths should be kept separate: the cantonal programme for building envelopes and heating replacement, solar consultation and the national one-time remuneration through Pronovo. Under the 2026 programme, applications generally must be filed before construction; energy consultation is exempt. Eligibility depends on the measure, building and filing date.

Important

As of 11 July 2026: the 2026 cantonal programme names the higher building-envelope contribution for full-surface PV combined with thermal insulation and a solar consultation. It does not state a general separate flat PV contribution. Eligibility, sequence and amount are reviewed by the responsible funding body for the specific project; this information is not individual incentive or tax advice.

What determines the right path.

The 2026 cantonal programme lists the PV-related additional support under the building envelope: an insulated building component is listed at CHF 60/m², and at CHF 120/m² when combined with a full-surface PV system. This is support for the combined measure, not a general separate PV tariff.

The programme defines full-surface coverage as 20% of the facade, or 50% of a flat or pitched roof. Whether a project meets this definition should be checked technically before submission.

The incentive application generally has to be submitted before construction starts. The exception concerns energy consultation: its application is submitted only after the consultation has been completed. A contract or construction start before the correct filing may jeopardise eligibility.

Solar consultation is a separate decision aid. The official short report covers, among other things, the condition of the roof and facade, potential, grid connection and metering, self-consumption, storage, e-mobility, incentives, rough costs and next steps.

Pronovo must be checked separately from the cantonal building programme. For the small one-time remuneration, Pronovo names systems below 100 kW; for the large one-time remuneration, systems above 100 kW. According to the FAQ, the tariff depends on commissioning date, maximum output and system type.

The cantonal programme is subject to the approved credit. According to the programme, the incentive is capped at CHF 100,000 per measure and at 50% of total investment costs; there is no legal entitlement. These caps do not replace a property-specific review.

How the project stays cleanly managed.

  1. 1

Classify the projectdetermine whether it is only a PV system, building-envelope insulation with full-surface PV, solar consultation or also a national Pronovo incentive application.

  2. 2

Check the building envelope and PV areadocument the roof or facade area, planned insulation and module area. For the PV bonus, check the official thresholds of 20% for facades and 50% for flat and pitched roofs.

  3. 3

Review the cantonal incentive programmecheck construction-year requirements, U-value requirements, minimum improvement and any GEAK Plus obligation for the building-envelope insulation. The 2026 programme names a building permit year before 2000 for supported buildings.

  4. 4

Consider solar consultationif potential, grid connection, metering, self-consumption, storage, costs or the permit route are still unclear, the official solar consultation can organise these points for the specific building. The energy-consultation application is submitted only after the consultation is complete.

  5. 5

Submit the application before constructionenter the cantonal incentive application online through the building programme linked by the canton before construction work starts. Keep project and cost documents separated by measure.

  6. 6

Check Pronovo separately and document completioncheck the applicable one-time remuneration based on output, commissioning date and system type, and keep approvals, invoices and final documents separately. The responsible funding body makes the binding decision on the specific application.

Questions to settle before the quote.

  • Classify the PV bonus for building-envelope insulation and full-surface systems correctly
  • Submit the incentive application before construction, with energy consultation as the exception
  • Use solar consultation for potential, grid connection, costs and next steps
  • Check the cantonal programme and Pronovo one-time remuneration separately

The responsible authorities are decisive. Always verify binding details – amounts, deadlines and conditions – for your specific property against the current status of the respective authority.

Solar Installation Nidwalden – Planning to Commissioning

Nidwalden consistently implements the Energy Strategy 2050 with its revised Energy Act (since November 2021). The largest cantonal system is in Stansstad: 3,200 panels on a highway roof deliver approximately 750,000 kWh/year. The doubling mechanism for combined insulation and solar projects requires coordinated project planning that activates both subsidy streams.

PV Installation Nidwalden – Roof & Electrical

Nidwalden has a high rate of renovated buildings with solar systems. The region around Bürgenstock and Stansstad benefits from above-average solar irradiation thanks to its sheltered location on Lake Lucerne. EWN as local provider offers fair feed-in conditions. The canton doubles insulation subsidies (60 to 120 CHF/m²) when a solar system is installed simultaneously – making combined roof projects particularly attractive.
