Short answer
How much is the PV incentive for protected buildings in Vaud?
In Vaud, S04 funding is intended for owners of buildings with MH or INV protection status and buildings in ISOS-A or IFP sites. Eligible systems are photovoltaic installations of at least 2 kW on pitched or mansard roofs. Funding is capped at CHF 20,000 per responsible service and CHF 40,000 in total; the application must be filed before construction.
Important
As of 2026, S04 is not a general Vaud PV incentive. Flat roofs, facade systems, solar thermal systems and installations below 2 kW are excluded on the incentive page; the contribution also cannot be combined with the M-01 solar bonus of the Buildings Programme. Construction before the funding decision or without the required building permit puts eligibility at risk.

Decision points
What determines the right path.
Protection status determines the funding route first. The building must be in Vaud and either be listed as a historic monument (MH) or in the cantonal inventory (INV), or be located in an ISOS-A or IFP site. Without one of these records, S04 is not the applicable incentive.
Roof type and minimum capacity limit the technical choice. The Vaud S04 page requires good, very good or excellent solar suitability and at least 2 kW. Pitched and mansard roofs are eligible; facades, flat roofs and solar thermal systems are outside this measure.
Funding is calculated from the additional cost of the protected solution, not from the project cost as a whole. The selected integrated or design-adapted PV system is compared with a black standard system of comparable scope. Supply, installation and electrical connections count toward the installation cost; sheet-metal work and other excluded works do not.
The additional-cost structure requires a realistic owner contribution. DGE-DIREN and DGIP-DMS can each contribute up to CHF 20,000, with a total cap of CHF 40,000. Under S04, each service can cover up to one third of the additional cost, while the remaining third stays with the owner.
Building law and funding must refer to the same project version. Before applying for funding, a building permit with the integration conditions from DGIP-DMS or the municipality is required. The application therefore includes not only quotes but also protection evidence, a roof plan, a section and a copy of the building permit.
Timing protects the funding claim. The S04 sequence provides for review and a funding decision first, construction afterwards and the completion form at the end. The measure also cannot be combined with the M-01 solar bonus of the Buildings Programme; this combination must be ruled out before filing.
Sequence
How the project stays cleanly managed.
- 1
Check protection and roof suitabilitydocument the MH or INV listing or the location in an ISOS-A or IFP site using the cantonal evidence. Then check the proposed roof in the BFE solar-roof tool and record whether a pitched or mansard roof with at least 2 kW is possible.
- 2
Prepare the integration concept and building permitdefine whether the array will be integrated, arranged as a band or placed as an isolated rectangle. The building permit with the integration conditions from DGIP-DMS or the municipality must be available before the incentive application.
- 3
Obtain comparable quotesrequest a detailed quote for the planned special solution including supply, installation and electrical connections. Also obtain a quote for a black standard system with comparable scope; the canton recommends comparing at least three suppliers where possible.
- 4
Submit the S04 applicationsend the form to DGE-DIREN with the two comparable quotes, data sheets, protection or inventory evidence, roof plan, section and building permit. The application must be filed before construction starts; then wait for the funding decision.
- 5
Build the system according to the approved versionstart installation only after the funding decision and do not silently change the array, integration, capacity or connections. The completed system must remain comparable to the S04 version submitted.
- 6
Document completion and paymentafter installation, submit the completion form with final invoices, commissioning protocol, updated plans, photographs and bank details. Payment is made in two equal transfers by DGE-DIREN and DGIP-DMS.
Checklist
Questions to settle before the quote.
- Document MH, INV, ISOS-A or IFP protection status and the roof’s solar suitability before requesting quotes
- Plan at least 2 kW on a pitched or mansard roof; flat roofs and facades are not eligible
- Obtain separate quotes for the special system and a black standard system with comparable scope
- Schedule the building permit, application before construction and completion documents for the two payments
