Background
#In 2026, BKW pays for exported solar power at the SFOE reference market price, retroactively per quarter, and pays the statutory minimum when that price is lower.
For photovoltaics below 30 kW this meant 10.27 ct/kWh in the first, 6.00 ct/kWh in the second and 8.54 ct/kWh in the third quarter, all excluding VAT; the fourth-quarter value will be published in January 2027. Since 1 April 2026, BKW has voluntarily paid 2.0 ct/kWh for guarantees of origin, provided the system has at least 2 kW and is eligible for «naturemade star». Since 1 July 2026, BKW has also offered remuneration based on the hourly spot price.

What drives the economics
#The value depends on the quarter. The BKW 2026 price sheet shows 10.27 ct/kWh in Q1 and 8.54 ct/kWh in Q3 for all PV classes. In Q2 the reference market price was 3.90 ct/kWh, so systems below 30 kW received the minimum of 6.00 ct/kWh and systems above 150 kW only 3.90 ct/kWh.
Size and self-consumption determine the minimum. Below 30 kW it is 6.00 ct/kWh. From 30 to 150 kW with self-consumption, BKW uses 180 divided by system capacity: 6 ct at 30 kW, 2 ct at 90 kW and 1.2 ct at 150 kW. Without self-consumption 6.20 ct/kWh applies; above 150 kW there is no minimum.
Guarantees of origin earn 2.0 ct/kWh. The HKN price sheet has applied since 1 April 2026. The system must be in the BKW supply area, feed into the BKW grid, have at least 2 kW, be eligible for «naturemade star», commissioned in 2000 or later and not free-standing. Systems with EVS, KEV, MKF or plug-and-play systems are excluded.
HKN deadlines are quarterly. Purchase starts on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October if the application arrives by 15 November, 15 February, 15 May or 15 August. BKW pre-registers the standing order with Pronovo; it must be accepted in the Pronovo portal within 30 days. If the electricity buyer changes, the HKN contract ends at the same time.
The spot-price option is voluntary. Since 1 July 2026, BKW has offered remuneration based on the hourly day-ahead price. It requires a smart metering system or equivalent measurement. Revenue can be lower in summer and higher in winter than in the quarterly model; applicable minimums remain protected as a top-up.
The BKW grid is not the whole canton. The price sheet applies to exports into the BKW distribution grid. Towns and municipalities with their own utility set their own feed-in tariffs. Check the connection address on the ElCom electricity price website before calculating.
The process in six steps
#Tick off for your project
Identify the grid operator
check on the ElCom electricity price website whether BKW is responsible for the connection address. Only then do the BKW price sheet and HKN offer apply.
Determine the tariff class
record capacity in kW and self-consumption. From 30 to 150 kW with self-consumption, calculate the minimum as 180 divided by kW and compare it with the quarterly price.
Calculate with quarterly values
multiply expected exports per quarter by the higher of reference price and minimum. Summer quarters bring high volumes at low prices, winter quarters low volumes at higher prices.
Register guarantees of origin
register and certify the system with Pronovo, wait for activation, submit the HKN application to BKW and accept the pre-registered standing order within 30 days.
Choose the model
quarterly model or spot-price remuneration. The spot-price variant pays off more with storage or controllable loads that avoid exporting in low-price hours.
Check the settlement
credits are usually issued quarterly, and the invoice shows whether the minimum or the market price was applied. Check the HKN payment separately.
