PV funding Obwalden: CHF 750/kWp from 75° tilt

Canton Obwalden's 2026 cantonal funding model lists photovoltaics under a single item: "winter-optimised system (75° – 90°)". From 2 kWp the contribution is a flat CHF 1,000 plus CHF 750 per kilowatt-peak, capped at CHF 8,000. That cap is reached at roughly 9.3 kWp; any further kilowatt-peak no longer increases the cantonal contribution. The 2026 funding conditions state two requirements for this path: the system is installed on an existing building — replacing a system or installing one as part of a new build is not eligible — and it is optimised for winter electricity production, with a module tilt of 75 to 90 degrees and an output above 2 kWp. For most house roofs in the canton the message is uncomfortable but unambiguous: a conventional roof system tilted at 25 to 40 degrees does not fall under this funding path and receives no cantonal contribution in Obwalden. What is funded is specifically the steep facade or steeply pitched system that produces in the winter half-year, when the electricity gap is largest. For all other systems the federal one-time payment via Pronovo remains the relevant funding. Where the Obwalden path does apply, two points make it comparatively attractive: the general rule that a contribution covers at most 50 percent of total investment costs expressly does not apply to winter-optimised photovoltaic systems, and clause 1.16 of the funding conditions exempts precisely these systems from the general ban on double funding.
