#In 2026, EKZ pays for exported solar power at the SFOE quarterly reference market price: 10.27 ct/kWh in the first, 3.90 in the second and 8.54 in the third quarter, all excluding VAT.
When that price falls below the statutory minimum, EKZ pays the minimum for systems below 150 kW, i.e. 6.00 ct/kWh below 30 kW. Selling the guarantees of origin (HKNs) to EKZ adds up to 3.00 ct/kWh; EKZ may reduce this add-on where base payment and HKN together exceed the system-specific eligibility limit. From 2027, the day-ahead spot price at the time of feed-in applies, and the HKN payment drops to at most 0.50 ct/kWh in the summer half-year.

What drives the economics
#The grid area decides, not the canton. The tariff sheet applies to exports into the EKZ grid from systems up to 3 MVA connection capacity or at most 5,000 MWh annual production after self-consumption. The City of Zurich is supplied by ewz, and some municipalities run their own utilities with their own tariffs.
The base payment is a quarterly value. In 2026, EKZ pays the SFOE quarterly reference market price for photovoltaics: 10.27 ct/kWh in Q1, 3.90 in Q2 and 8.54 in Q3, excluding VAT. The Q4 value is due by the 10th working day of January 2027. An annual calculation based on a single quarter does not reflect this.
The minimum only applies when the market price is lower. Below 30 kW it is 6.00 ct/kWh; from 30 kW with self-consumption, 180 divided by system capacity in kW (6.00 to 1.20 ct/kWh); from 30 kW without self-consumption, 6.20 ct/kWh. From 150 kW there is no minimum. In Q2 2026 the reference price of 3.90 ct/kWh was below it.
The HKN payment is capped. EKZ pays up to 3.00 ct/kWh but may reduce it when base and HKN exceed the eligibility limit: 10.96 ct/kWh with self-consumption below 100 kW, 7.20 from 100 kW, 8.20 without self-consumption below 100 kW and 5.40 from 100 kW. In Q1 2026, 10.27 plus 3.00 ct/kWh would have exceeded the 10.96 limit.
HKNs need lead time. Requirements are notice on «myEKZ», certification of the system in Pronovo’s HKN system and a confirmed standing order to EKZ at least 14 days before the quarter starts. Switching with or without HKN takes effect at quarter start if notified by 15 November, 15 February, 15 May or 15 August. Below 2 kVA Pronovo issues no HKNs.
In 2027 the base changes. Under the 2027 tariff sheet, EKZ pays the day-ahead spot price at the time of feed-in; if the quarterly reference price is below the minimum, the difference is added as a minimum premium. HKN payment is up to 3.00 ct/kWh in Q1 and Q4 and up to 0.50 in Q2 and Q3, lapses at negative prices and for systems without self-consumption from 100 kW. Systems without a smart meter stay on the quarterly price until one is installed.

Check the grid operator
use the connection address on the ElCom electricity price website to confirm that EKZ is responsible. If the property is in the ewz area or served by a municipal utility, that tariff applies.
Record the tariff class
document system capacity in kW and the self-consumption model. Below 30 kW, 30 to below 150 kW with or without self-consumption and from 150 kW are different lines of the EKZ tariff sheet.
Estimate exports per quarter
calculate production, direct use, storage and exports separately and multiply each quarter’s exports by the SFOE value or the minimum, whichever is higher.
Decide on HKNs
have the system certified by Pronovo, register the HKN sale on «myEKZ» and confirm the prepared standing order at least 14 days before the quarter starts. Alternatively, all HKNs may be sold to a third party.
Clarify buyer and deadlines
ending or resuming delivery to EKZ is possible at quarter-end with one month’s notice. Anyone planning to sell to a third party should schedule the switch accordingly.
Prepare for 2027
ask when the smart metering system will be installed. From then on the spot price at the time of feed-in applies, and self-consumption at summer midday becomes worth more than exporting.
