In the Canton of Zurich, investments in PV systems are 100% deductible as property maintenance – for both new installations and replacements. Costs can be spread over up to three tax periods. Zurich has no general cantonal PV top-up. The relevant elements are the Pronovo one-time payment, the cantonal battery storage subsidy of CHF 500/kWh (max. CHF 15,000, limited until the end of 2026), and municipal programs depending on the municipality. In the City of Zurich, EWZ is relevant with an average standard tariff of 12.91 Rp./kWh and 14 Rp./kWh in the LEG model.

Permits and energy law

Since January 1, 2023, most solar systems in Canton Zurich only require notification (30 days before construction) — no building permit. Exceptions: listed buildings, protected zones, facade systems on protected objects. Zurich implemented MuKEn 2014 as of 2022. New buildings must install at least 10 watts of solar capacity per square meter of energy reference area. The revised Energy Act (EnG ZH) also requires switching to renewable systems when replacing heating.
