PV Installation Zürich – Roof & Electrical

People looking for PV installation in Canton Zürich compare more than modules. They compare execution quality, roof protection and coordination. That is why this page focuses on the points that matter before quoting and installation.

Local system fit

In Canton Zurich, dense building stock and complex roof geometries meet high quality expectations. EWZ and EKZ compensate feed-in at up to 14 Rp./kWh (ewz.solarquartier) – rewarding clean installation that ensures maximum long-term output. At the same time, cantonal building insurer GVZ restricts facade systems on larger buildings for fire safety – making the roof the primary resource, and its professional utilisation all the more important.

For Zürich we plan PV installations object-specifically: mounting structures per SIA 261, SUVA-compliant fall protection and complete handover documentation before the system goes live.

Context

How this service works in Zürich in practice.

Zürich comes with its own framework conditions – from incentives and tax treatment to technical requirements. This page shows how those translate into a clean project flow for your property.

What really matters for installation on site

People looking for PV installation in Canton Zürich compare more than modules. They compare execution quality, roof protection and coordination. That is why this page focuses on the points that matter before quoting and installation. Mounting structure per SIA 261, documented penetrations, SUVA-compliant fall protection and complete handover including string diagram, measurement protocol and photo documentation.

Service focus

  • Mounting structure matched to tile, sheet metal, facade or flat-roof systems – not generic, but dimensioned object-specifically to wind zone (SIA 261), snow loads and building height.
  • Clean cable routing with documented penetrations and roof membrane protection. Every transition between roof and electrical installation is photographed and recorded.
  • Coordination of scaffolding, fall protection (SUVA-compliant), installation logistics and object-specific safety requirements – including a mounting concept prior to material ordering.
  • Photo documentation and traceable handover: single-line diagram, string plan, data sheets, measurement protocol, photos – everything needed for acceptance, grid operator and future service.

Regional framework

Why this canton shifts the priorities

In Canton Zurich, dense building stock and complex roof geometries meet high quality expectations. EWZ and EKZ compensate feed-in at up to 14 Rp./kWh (ewz.solarquartier) – rewarding clean installation that ensures maximum long-term output. At the same time, cantonal building insurer GVZ restricts facade systems on larger buildings for fire safety – making the roof the primary resource, and its professional utilisation all the more important. Zurich is Switzerland's largest cantonal market. With over 12,600 existing installations and only 4% of potential used, this represents the greatest growth potential. The combination of high incomes (maximum tax deduction) and high roof availability (70%+ suitable) makes Zurich the most attractive PV market in Switzerland.

Regional framework

  • In Canton Zürich, roof type, access and cable routing need to be clarified early so installation does not turn into change orders.
  • Owners compare execution quality, roof protection and clear ownership more than simple price promises.
  • Site logic directly affects timing, appearance and future maintenance.
03
Project logic

How roof, installation and electrical work fit together

In the Canton of Zurich, investments in PV systems are 100% deductible as property maintenance – for both new installations and replacements. Costs can be spread over up to three tax periods. Mounting structure and scaffolding planned around roof type and access.

Project logic

  • Mounting structure and scaffolding planned around roof type and access.
  • Clean penetrations, orderly cable routing and documented handover.
  • Aligned workflow between installation, electrical work and commissioning.

Cantonal framework

Which cantonal framework shapes the project in Zürich.

The technical service stays the same, but the project frame changes with the canton. That is exactly where incentives, tax treatment and MuKEn requirements become strategically relevant.

Local context

Zürich sets the economic pace for this service.

Zurich is a pioneer in ZEV projects (self-consumption associations) in multi-family houses and has the most registered ZEV communities nationwide. ETH Zurich actively researches building-integrated solar technology.

Tax and subsidy logic

In the Canton of Zurich, investments in PV systems are 100% deductible as property maintenance – for both new installations and replacements. Costs can be spread over up to three tax periods. Zurich has no general cantonal PV top-up. The relevant elements are the Pronovo one-time payment, the cantonal battery storage subsidy of CHF 500/kWh (max. CHF 15,000, limited until the end of 2026), and municipal programs depending on the municipality. In the City of Zurich, EWZ is relevant with an average standard tariff of 12.91 Rp./kWh and 14 Rp./kWh in the LEG model.

Permits and energy law

Since January 1, 2023, most solar systems in Canton Zurich only require notification (30 days before construction) — no building permit. Exceptions: listed buildings, protected zones, facade systems on protected objects. Zurich implemented MuKEn 2014 as of 2022. New buildings must install at least 10 watts of solar capacity per square meter of energy reference area. The revised Energy Act (EnG ZH) also requires switching to renewable systems when replacing heating.

Market signal and location

Zurich is Switzerland's largest cantonal market. With over 12,600 existing installations and only 4% of potential used, this represents the greatest growth potential. The combination of high incomes (maximum tax deduction) and high roof availability (70%+ suitable) makes Zurich the most attractive PV market in Switzerland. There is no general cantonal PV bonus in Zurich. The standard element is the Pronovo one-time payment (modelled in the calculator as CHF 360/kWp). In addition, there is a cantonal battery storage subsidy of CHF 500/kWh (max. CHF 15,000, limited until the end of 2026) and selected municipal add-on programs depending on the municipality.
